# Updating the portal

With your answers ready, the last step is putting them into the portal itself.
The extension does this a question at a time, and helps you keep your place as
you move through the pages.

## Finding your place

The extension keeps itself aligned with the portal page you are looking at:

- Questions that aren't on the current page are **greyed out** and collapsed
- Questions that are on the page are highlighted, and the sidebar scrolls to them
- Selecting a question in the portal brings up that question in the extension

So as you move from section to section, the extension narrows itself to whatever
is in front of you.

## Fill in an answer

Select **Update Portal** on a question. The extension writes your answer into the
portal's answer box, and sets the yes, no, or N/A control where the portal has
one.

Work down the page question by question, then move to the next section.

## When a portal isn't fully supported

Portals vary enormously, and some of the older ones are built in ways that are
difficult to work with — nested iframes, or HTML that is hard to interpret
reliably.

The extension has been tested against most major portals, including a number of
legacy ones. Even so, you may occasionally hit a question where:

- The answer box cannot be found on the page
- The answer box is hidden behind a button or another control
- The response options are something other than yes/no — options A, B, and C, for
  example

In those cases, fill that question in by hand and carry on.

<Aside type="tip" title="Tell us about portals that don't work">
Full coverage is the goal. If you are working with a portal the extension handles
badly, contact support and tell us which one — that is how coverage improves.
